Look for shared customer value before shared promotion

A partnership becomes a channel when another organization serves the same ideal customer with a complementary product and both sides can identify value from the relationship. A logo exchange or friendly announcement does not create distribution by itself.

Choose a partnership mechanism

The mechanism should match the customer journey and each side's capabilities:

  • native integrations promoted in both ecosystems;
  • referrals from agencies or consultants;
  • affiliate compensation tied to verified retained revenue;
  • reseller, implementation or channel arrangements;
  • joint education such as a webinar, research, template or customer story;
  • marketplace listings, bundles or embedded distribution.

The same label can hide very different work. An integration needs product ownership, while a referral program needs qualification, handoff and payout rules.

Validate mutual commitment manually

  1. Speak with a small set of plausible partners about customer overlap, incentive and operating capacity.
  2. Choose a limited joint offer that can be delivered manually.
  3. Define lead ownership, attribution, compensation and customer support before launch.
  4. Review activated accounts and retained value before expanding the arrangement.

The number of interviews or offers is not a universal threshold. The purpose of the test is to expose whether both sides will perform the required work.

Inspect value for the customer and both partners

Track partner-sourced activated accounts, conversion, retained revenue, time to the first useful result and revenue concentration by partner. Also inspect failed handoffs and support load: revenue attributed to a partner can still represent a poor customer experience or excessive operational cost.

Expand only with an operating owner

Partnerships can accumulate value, but they often require coordination before producing a signal. Expand when each side has a named owner, a measurable incentive and a repeatable handoff. Stop treating the relationship as a channel when only the founders promote it, quality is unclear or no one owns delivery.
